Interview answer
The Gradle Wrapper is a script you check into your project that lets anyone build your code without installing Gradle globally.
bat on Windows. /gradlew build, the script first checks if the right Gradle version is already downloaded. If not, it downloads it automatically, then runs your build.
The version is specified in a properties file, so everyone on the team and every CI server uses the exact same Gradle version. This solves the version mismatch problem. If I have Gradle 7 installed and you have Gradle 8, we'd get different build results.
- 5You commit the wrapper files to Git — the gradlew scripts and the gradle wrapper directory. /gradlew build.
That defeats the whole purpose because you're using your globally installed version, not the project's version. Maven eventually copied this idea and created the Maven Wrapper, which works the same way.
Gradle Wrapper (gradlew)
Direct Answer
The Gradle Wrapper is a script (gradlew / gradlew.bat) checked into the project that downloads and runs the exact Gradle version specified for the project — ensuring everyone and every CI server uses the same Gradle version without needing Gradle installed globally.
Code Example
// gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties
distributionBase=GRADLE_USER_HOME
distributionPath=wrapper/dists
distributionUrl=https\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-8.5-bin.zip
zipStoreBase=GRADLE_USER_HOME
zipStorePath=wrapper/dists
// Running builds with the wrapper (Unix/Mac)
./gradlew clean build
./gradlew test --tests UserServiceTest
./gradlew bootRun
// On Windows
gradlew.bat clean build
// Upgrading the Gradle version for the project
./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version 8.6
// CI configuration (GitHub Actions example)
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v3
- name: Build with Gradle
run: ./gradlew build # No Gradle installation needed
Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
- Using 'gradle' instead of './gradlew': Freshers often install Gradle globally and type gradle build, which uses whatever version they installed, not the project's version. This breaks reproducibility.
- Not committing wrapper files: The gradlew script, gradlew.bat, and gradle/wrapper/ directory must be committed to Git. Some freshers add them to .gitignore thinking they're build artifacts.
- Forgetting to set execute permissions: On Unix systems, gradlew needs execute permission (chmod +x gradlew). If it's not set, teammates get "permission denied" errors when trying to build.
