Interview answer
Maven Central is the standard public remote repository used by Maven's default configuration. When a build needs coordinates that are not available locally—or a snapshot policy requires an update—Maven resolves the artifact and its POM from the configured repositories or mirror and records them in the local repository. The POM supplies metadata used to resolve transitive dependencies.
For example, com.fasterxml.jackson.core:jackson-databind:2.16.0 maps to the group path com/fasterxml/jackson/core, followed by the artifact and version directories. In a company, settings.xml often mirrors all requests through Nexus or Artifactory, so Maven may obtain the Central artifact from that internal server. Central is important, but it is neither the only repository nor contacted by every build.
Maven Central Repository
Direct Answer
Maven Central is Maven's default public remote repository for many open-source Java artifacts. Maven resolves declared coordinates from configured repositories, stores downloaded artifacts in the local repository (normally ~/.m2/repository), and reuses that cache. Not every library is in Central, and organizations often use a repository manager as a controlled proxy.
Code Example
Coordinates:
com.fasterxml.jackson.core:jackson-databind:2.16.0
Repository path:
com/fasterxml/jackson/core/jackson-databind/2.16.0/
jackson-databind-2.16.0.jar
jackson-databind-2.16.0.pom
Default Central base URL:
https://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2/
Maven may request this path through a mirror configured in settings.xml instead of contacting Central directly.
Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
- Assuming every build contacts Central: a local artifact or configured mirror may satisfy resolution.
- Adding Central explicitly to every POM: normal Maven configuration already includes it.
- Using a search website as the repository URL: discovery pages and repository endpoints are different.
- Deleting all of
.m2for one bad artifact: remove the affected path when possible; local-only installed artifacts may not be recoverable remotely. - Assuming every library is in Central: internal or restricted artifacts may require an approved private repository.
