Interview answer
Docker Compose describes a multi-container application in a YAML file. Each service can define an image or build, environment, commands, ports, networks, volumes, dependencies, and health checks. docker compose up creates the declared resources and starts or recreates the services.
For example, a Spring Boot api service and PostgreSQL db service join the default Compose network. The API uses db as the database host, while a named volume holds the database files when the container is replaced. depends_on can express ordering and, with supported health conditions, wait for health—but the application should still retry a temporarily unavailable database.
Compose is excellent for local development, demos, integration tests, and some single-host deployments. It is not a multi-node cluster orchestrator, and a Compose file should not contain committed production passwords. I use it to make a small application topology reproducible, not as proof that every dependency is ready or highly available.
What is Docker Compose and when would you use it
Direct Answer
Docker Compose is a tool for defining and running multi-container applications using a YAML file. Use it when your Spring Boot app depends on other services—like PostgreSQL for data, Redis for caching, or Kafka for messaging—so you can start the entire stack with one docker compose up command.
Deep Dive & Architecture
Docker Compose defines a multi-container application in YAML: services, images/builds, networks, volumes, environment, dependencies, and health checks. docker compose up creates the declared resources and starts or recreates services so a team can run the same local topology repeatedly.
For example, a Spring Boot API can use the service name db to reach a PostgreSQL service on the Compose network. A named volume can preserve database data when the container is recreated. depends_on controls startup ordering and can use health conditions in supported Compose behavior, but it does not replace application retries or readiness handling.
Compose is useful for development, integration tests, demos, and some single-host deployments. It is not a multi-node orchestrator and should not contain committed production secrets. Use environment files carefully or a secret mechanism appropriate to the target platform.
Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
- Using Compose in production: Freshers sometimes think Compose is a production orchestration tool like Kubernetes. It's not—Compose lacks high availability, scaling when configured, rolling updates, and health checks needed in production. Use Kubernetes or managed services for production.
- Hardcoding sensitive data in docker-compose.yml: Putting real database passwords directly in the YAML file that gets committed to Git is a security risk. Use environment files like .env and add them to .gitignore, then reference with ${DB_PASSWORD} syntax.
- Not understanding service names as hostnames: Compose automatically creates a network where services reach each other by their service name. If your service is named
db, your Spring Boot app connects tojdbc:postgresql://db:5432, notlocalhost:5432.
