findById Return Type: Optional in Spring Data

Core answer
Whether you understand Optional as a null-safety contract and can unwrap it idiomatically inside a REST flow
Calling .get() directly (NoSuchElementException), or using isPresent() then get() instead of functional methods like map/orElseThrow
Show orElseThrow() mapping to an HTTP 404 via @ControllerAdvice, and note Optional should only be a return type, never an entity field or parameter

Interview answer
A primary-key lookup has two normal outcomes: one entity or no entity. Optional expresses both without using a nullable return. A service can transform the value with map, provide a default with orElse, or raise a domain-specific NotFound exception with orElseThrow. That last choice is common in APIs, but Spring Data does not automatically turn it into 404; an exception handler or ResponseEntity mapping does. Optional helps make absence visible in the method type. It cannot prevent null bugs elsewhere, and calling get without checking simply replaces one failure with NoSuchElementException.
findById Return Type: Optional in Spring Data
Direct Answer
findById returns Optional<T> because a row with that identifier may not exist. Optional makes the caller handle that absence explicitly, but it does not by itself prevent every NullPointerException. Use map, orElse, orElseThrow according to the layer's contract; converting absence to HTTP 404 requires controller or exception-mapping logic.
Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
.get()without a check — throwsNoSuchElementException; defeats the whole point of Optional.- Returning
Optional<Order>from a controller — unwrap in the controller; returnResponseEntityor the entity. isPresent()thenget()— verbose and error-prone; preferifPresent(),map(), ororElseThrow().- Optional as an entity field or method parameter — it's not
Serializableand breaks JPA mapping; use it only as a return type.
