RabbitMQ Message Durability and Persistence

Core answer
Understanding that durability is not a single switch but requires coordination between exchange, queue, and message properties.
Declaring a durable queue but sending transient messages (delivery mode 1), or the reverse — persistent messages to a non-durable queue.
Mention lazy queues for memory efficiency, the impact of fsync on throughput, and how publisher confirms complement durability to give end-to-end guarantees.

Interview answer
Message durability in RabbitMQ is a three-part contract — this is the key insight that most developers miss. It's not a single "durable" flag but three separate settings that must all be correct for messages to survive a broker restart.
The three parts:
- The exchange must be durable so its definition survives restart; the queue must be durable so it is recreated on restart; and each message must have delivery mode set to PERSISTENT so the broker writes the body to disk
- Miss any one of these and messages disappear on restart — a persistent message in a non-durable queue is destroyed when the queue is recreated empty after restart
Spring AMQP defaults:
- The defaults are actually safe:
Jackson2JsonMessageConvertersets PERSISTENT, andQueueBuilder.durable()handles the queue flag - The common mistake is using a custom converter that forgets to set delivery mode, so everything looks durable in the queue declaration but messages are transient in practice
The fsync gap — the part most people miss:
- The broker acks a message after buffering it in memory, before the disk write completes; if the broker crashes in that window, the message is lost despite correct durability settings
- Publisher confirms close this gap — the broker only acks after the message is on disk
- Quorum queues with Raft consensus replicate to a majority of nodes before acking, providing the strongest durability guarantee available
The throughput trade-off:
- Persistent mode reduces throughput by 2–5× on SSDs due to fsync overhead per message or batch
I recommend persistent for business state, transient for ephemeral telemetry, and always enabling publisher confirms for any message that represents a business transaction.
RabbitMQ Message Durability and Persistence
Direct Answer
Message durability requires three settings: declare the exchange as durable, declare the queue as durable, and set the message delivery mode to PERSISTENT (2). All three must be set — missing any one of them means messages can be lost on broker restart. The trade-off is reduced throughput because persistent messages are written to disk.
