Interview answer
Namespaces and RBAC together enforce multi-team isolation in Kubernetes — namespaces provide the boundary, RBAC controls what each team can do within and across. The critical insight is that namespaces are not security boundaries; they are organizational boundaries reinforced by RBAC.
Namespaces — organizational isolation
- Every resource lives in a namespace;
kube-systemholds cluster components, defaultis where workloads land if you don't specify — always deploy to an explicitly created namespace, neverdefault. - Namespaces scope resource names — two teams can each have a Service named
payment-apiwithout conflict; DNS resolves them aspayment-api.team-a.svc.cluster.localandpayment-api.team-b.svc.cluster.local. ResourceQuotalimits total CPU, memory, and object counts per namespace — the platform team controls how much each team can consume without per-deploy coordination.
RBAC — who can do what
- Four objects:
Role(namespace-scoped),ClusterRole(cluster-wide),RoleBinding(assigns Role to subject in a namespace),ClusterRoleBinding(assigns ClusterRole cluster-wide). - Least privilege: developers have
get/list/watchon Pods and Deployments in their namespace,create/deletein non-prod only; prod is read-only and deploys happen via CI with a separate pipeline ServiceAccount. kubectl auth can-i create deployments -n team-a --as developer@company.comverifies effective permissions before incidents, not after.
Production team separation
- Separate namespaces per team and environment:
payments-prod,payments-staging,payments-dev; RBAC forpayments-prodis far stricter than dev. - NetworkPolicy enforces communication boundaries — without them, any pod in any namespace can reach any Service cluster-wide; a policy allowing ingress only from expected namespaces prevents lateral movement after compromise.
- ServiceAccounts should be namespace-scoped with minimum permissions; pods that do not need API access set
automountServiceAccountToken: falseso the default token is not mounted inside the container.
Quota and safety nets
ResourceQuotaprevents one team from consuming the whole cluster; pair withLimitRangeso pods without explicit requests/limits still get default boundaries and cannot bypass the quota system.- Pod Security Standards at
restrictedenforcement prevents privileged pods, host-path mounts, and root users in untrusted namespaces — the replacement for deprecated PodSecurityPolicy.
Kubernetes Namespaces and RBAC for Multi-Team Environments
Direct Answer
Namespaces provide logical (not security) isolation within a cluster. RBAC controls which users and ServiceAccounts can perform which verbs on which resources in which namespaces — Role is namespace-scoped, ClusterRole is cluster-wide. Combine namespaces + RBAC + ResourceQuota + LimitRange + NetworkPolicy for secure, cost-bounded multi-tenancy. Enforce least privilege on ServiceAccounts so compromised pods have minimal blast radius.
Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
Giving developers cluster-admin, granting default ServiceAccount unrestricted access, or forgetting ResourceQuota so one team exhausts cluster
