Interview answer
Overloading and overriding are Java's two forms of polymorphism — they differ in when the method is selected: compile time vs runtime.
Overloading (compile-time):
- Multiple methods with the same name but different parameter lists (types or count)
- Compiler picks the matching overload at the call site based on argument types
- Cannot overload by return type alone — the parameters must differ
Overriding (runtime):
- Subclass provides its own implementation of an inherited method with the exact same signature
- JVM uses dynamic dispatch:
Animal a = new Dog(); a.speak()calls Dog's version at runtime - Rules: same or wider access, covariant return types allowed, fewer checked exceptions allowed
Gotchas:
- Static methods are hidden, not overridden — dispatch uses the declared type, not the actual object type
- Always use
@Override— without it, a typo silently creates a new method instead of overriding
I recommend thinking of overloading as convenience (multiple ways to call the same behavior) and overriding as specialization (subclasses customizing inherited behavior).
Method Overloading vs Method Overriding in Java
Direct Answer
Overloading means multiple methods in the same class share a name but differ in parameter types or count — resolved at compile time. Overriding means a subclass provides its own implementation of a method inherited from the parent — resolved at runtime via dynamic dispatch. Overloading is compile-time polymorphism; overriding is runtime polymorphism.
