Interview answer
Structured logging means writing each log entry as machine-readable key-value pairs, usually JSON, instead of a freeform sentence.
- 99The reason this is preferred is querying. In production, logs get shipped to a central system like the ELK stack, Splunk, or Datadog, and you want to ask questions like show me all orders over fifty dollars, or all requests that returned a 500.
With plain text you'd have to write fragile regular expressions to pull those values out of the sentence, and that breaks the moment someone changes the wording. With structured logging, total and status are real fields, so it's just a simple field query, and you can build dashboards and alerts directly on those fields.
Structured logging also pairs really well with MDC, the mapped diagnostic context, which lets you automatically attach things like a request ID and user ID to every log line for a request, so all the entries for one transaction share those fields and you can group them instantly. In a Spring Boot app you'd typically add something like the logstash-logback-encoder to output JSON.
For a tiny local script, plain text is fine and more readable, but for any real service whose logs you actually query and alert on, structured logging is the standard because it turns your logs into queryable data instead of just text.
Structured Logging in Java
Direct Answer
Structured logging records named fields such as event, orderId, and durationMs alongside a log event. A provider may encode them as JSON, logfmt, or another machine-readable form. Search and alert tools can query the fields directly instead of parsing changing sentence text, while a human-readable message can still be included.
Deep Dive & Architecture
Structured logging stores named fields with an event instead of hiding every value inside one sentence. A provider may encode those fields as JSON, logfmt, or another format understood by the collection system.
For example, an event can contain event=order_placed, orderId=42, status=accepted, and durationMs=18. A search can filter by status or aggregate durationMs without parsing a changing sentence.
The field names form a small data contract. Keep them consistent, use proper number and boolean types, and avoid serializing whole domain objects. Structure improves queries only when sensitive data is excluded and the schema stays understandable.

- What are debugging and logging and why do they matter from day one? Debugging is finding and fixing defects; logging is recording what your program did — together they are how you understand code that isn't doing what you expect.
