Good GraphQL schema design starts with one rule: design for clients, not your database. Schemas where every database column shows up as a field, snake_case leaks from Postgres, and foreign key IDs are exposed instead of related objects are a common and expensive mistake.
The nullability trap — the most critical production decision:
- Overusing
!non-null sounds like good type safety, but the real consequence is null bubbling — if a non-null field throws, GraphQL nulls the parent; if the parent is also non-null, it keeps cascading upward and can erase an entire query response from a single resolver failure - Default nullable, mark only truly invariant fields like
idas non-null, and tighten later as resolvers prove stable in production; loosening nullability later is a breaking change, tightening is non-breaking
Pagination — Relay Connections from the start:
- Use the Relay Connection pattern for all list fields:
edges, node, cursor, andpageInfo; it feels like ceremony initially but gives stable cursor-based pagination and room for edge metadata without breaking clients when requirements evolve - The alternative is returning a plain
[Book]!list — which means breaking the schema when you later need pagination or edge-level data
Mutation design:
- Mutations should use dedicated input types and return payload types with a
UserErrorlist; validation failures come back as structured data that clients can map to form fields - Reserve the top-level
errorsarray for unexpected system failures — things the client can't recover from; useUserErrorfor "title is required" or "email already taken" - Enums and custom scalars like
DateTimeenforce contracts at parse time so invalid values fail at schema parsing, not in resolver code
I recommend establishing nullability conventions in your schema design guide before the first field is published — it's far easier to tighten nullability later than to deal with null bubbling in production.
GraphQL Schema Design Best Practices
Direct Answer
Design schemas from the client's perspective (not the database), use strong types and enums over strings, prefer connections/edges for paginated lists, keep mutations fine-grained with dedicated input types, never expose internal IDs or implementation details, and plan for nullable vs non-null carefully since non-null fields break clients on any error.
