Interview answer
Factorial of a non-negative integer n is the product from 1 through n, with `0!
= 1. The recursive version returns 1 for 0 or 1, and otherwise returns n * factorial(n - 1)`. The iterative version starts a result at 1 and multiplies by each value from 2 through n.
For n = 4, both calculate 2 * 3 * 4 = 24; recursion creates calls for 4, 3, 2, and 1, while the loop updates one local result as 2, 6, and 24. Both take O(n) time. The difference is space and safety: recursion keeps O(n) stack frames, while iteration uses O(1) auxiliary space, and Java does not generally eliminate tail calls.
The numeric type is another boundary. overflows, so larger exact results needBigInteger`. Negative factorial is undefined for this method and should be rejected.
The iterative form is therefore the straightforward Java choice for large valid inputs, while the recursive form is useful for showing the recurrence and call-stack behavior.
Factorial: Recursive vs Iterative Comparison
Direct Answer
Recursive factorial is clean but uses O(n) stack frames and risks StackOverflowError for large N. Iterative factorial uses O(1) space and is safe for all practical inputs. Both are O(n) time, so prefer the iterative version in production.
